What is a Corporate or Union Team Captain?
Corporate and Union Team Captains are a big part of what makes the Walk to Cure Diabetes successful!

How can you become one?
That’s easy. Just follow these four steps to becoming a 2007 Walk To Cure Diabetes Corporate Team Captain:

1. Sign Up! AND Register to Walk.

2. Recruit Walkers! Attend the Team Captain's Kick-Off Luncheon. At the Kick-Off Luncheon, you will receive information and materials needed to start building your team co-workers, family and friends. If you can't make it, please contact the chapter to send materials to you directly!

Appoint a Head Captain to lead the team building effort and to serve as the liaison with the JDRF office
Recruit multiple Team Captains by department or floor
Have all Team Captains attend the Team Captains Kick-off Luncheon
Consider holding an "All Team Captains Meeting" to discuss goals/actions/progress of team
Recruit additional team captains through an internal memo from CEO/President to all depatment heads asking them to serve as or identify team Captains (Draft available)
Recruit additional walkers through an internal memo from CEO/President to all employees encouraging them to join the team and promoting fundraising and incentive prizes (Draft available)
Schedule an internal kickoff (see below for details!)

3. Raise Money! JDRF will supply you with tips and tools to help you raise the much-needed funds to find a cure for diabetes. You will also be provided with information on how to keep track of and turn in donations.

4. Walk! Come to the walk site with your entire team and celebrate your efforts that made the 2007 Walk to Cure Diabetes so successful. With your support, we are now one step closer to finding a cure!

FUNDRAISING IDEAS & HELP
Web Site Features When you register, a web page is already set up for you! All you have to do is put in the e-mail addresses of the people you want to invite to join your team or make a donation. If you've misplaced your username or password, contact the JDRF office.
Letter Writing Campaigns Write letters to friends, family, clients, venders, etc. Explain your desire to collect as much money as possible. Include your personal goal ($$$), why you’re walking, the benefits of donating, why you believe in JDRF, and where to sendtheir contribution. Here are a few sample letters.
JDRF Casual
Days

Sell Walk buttons for $5 in exchange for employee participation in a Friday JDRF Casual Day, Favorite Sports Team Day, Jeans Day or Shorts Day.

JDRF Wall of Fame or Intranet Page

Put up large, colorful "Look Who’s Walking On Our Team" posters with Polaroid photos recognizing those employees and members who have signed up to walk. If your company or group has an intranet, post updates about the team on it! This will get the attention of those who haven’t signed up!

Wall of Sneakers

Measure each walker’s progress by posting their name on a colored sneaker according to the dollar amount reached (i.e., yellow-$25, green-$50, red-$75, blue-$100). When all walkers have a blue sneaker with their name on the wall–you’ve reached goal!

"Face of Diabetes" Wall

People participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes for many different reasons. Being able to show the stories of those individuals who are willing to be recognized in your organization or company that Diabetes affects is both an educational tool as well as a fundraising tool. If appropriate, place a picture of the individual or family and a "story" of how diabetes has affected them.

JDRF Captain Competitions

Announce a new competition each Friday at your regular Team Captain’s meetings between your departmental/floor captains. For example, the Captain who recruits the most walkers each will receive:

  • Blue "Number One" Ribbon to wear for the week
  • A gift certificate to their favorite restaurant
  • Their photo on a special recognition wall
  • A gift certificate for a new pair of sneakers, etc.
